Local Rock Island Heros of the '50s

   

Rush Springs Rock Island Section Crew

Photo taken in the Spring of 1954. This crew of Guy Woody, Gilford Whitley, Williard Merritt, and section foreman Ike Haynes were contacted by the City of Duncan to lay track and help move the locomotive from the railhead in Duncan to Fuqua Park.

"Ike" Haynes

Rush Springs, OK. Rock Island Forman and Track Supervisor with 37 years. He headed up the Rock Island Section Crew that directed the track laying and hopscotching of track sections from the rear to the front of the 905.

David Haynes

Duncan, OK. Son of Ike Haynes. Helped his father with the track laying and hired on with Halliburton during the job. 40 years with Halliburton.

Cletis Ball, Sr.

Marlow, OK. Halliburton employee of 27 years. Sent by Halliburton to help move the 905.

Fred N. Scifres

Fred Scifres,Rush Springs, OK, was a Rock Island employee of 25 years. He was part of the crew that helped line up the rails in front of the locomotive while it moved to the park.

L.V. Williams

Comanche, OK, Rock Island Employee for 38 years. He helped move the locomotive from the siding by bending rails to form a curve onto Oak Street.

Comanche, OK, Halliburton Employee.

Roland Gay

Duncan, OK. Halliburton Employee of 31 years. Also volunteered by Halliburton to help move the 905.

Rock Island Maintance of Way Relief Foreman, Southern District.

Willie Travis, Marlow, OK, was a Rock Island employee of 31 years. He was part of the crew that helped line up the rails in front of the locomotive while it moved to the park.

Elmer Petty

Elmer Petty, Duncan, OK, was an independent trucker owner/operator who volunteered his truck and himself to help move the locomotive.

Clifford C. King

Former Frisco Railroad Roundhouse foreman. Put in charge of moving the locomotive to the park.

Rock Island Employee, a member of the Rush Springs Maintenance of Way crew.

Gilford "Gilley" Whitley

Gilley was a member of the Rock Island Crew who moved the 905 to Fuqua Park. He assisted in moving the rail sections forward and setting them in place. He was a 30 year man with the RI.
